I'll be blunt, learning languages this way is idiotic and unproductive. I've tried their previous game - the Hiragana one, was it? - and in about an hour of gameplay it taught me a whopping 5 letters. The rest of the time was wasted doing dumb RPG stuff/English dialogue/'plot', and the actual learning process itself is slow and a waste of time because the game aspect detracts from it (for example, in a battle you're supposed to recognize the character and attack it with the correct pronunciation attack, but then it still sticks around and you waste time battling something you've already figured out).

The rate at which you learn is absolutely abysmal, all you're doing is wasting your time playing an RPG maker game. This is no way to learn a new language, especially not the relative basics. Don't waste your time on these games.

I've been playing with the Japanese Duolingo for a while now and my biggest complaint is that it just drops a lot of nuances on you without explaining any of them beforehand and your only resource is to look at the comments for the lesson to see if someone can explain how or why certain things work. For instance, the character は is initially shown pronounced as 'ha' and then occasionally switches to 'wa' depending on circumstance (I think? Neither of these are explained and you just have to roll with it.

Then when you finally get into kanji, there is no tutorial for sentence structure/etc. So you're very much left to sink or swim. Previously, doing it on the web app gave access to more information regarding grammar rules and stuff, or like you said, finding the comments on lessons. Maybe they've moved that into the mobile client by now, it seemed mostly a UI problem.
